The Devil's Backbone (2001)

The film, directed by Guillermo del Toro, is an excellent supernatural horror thriller with a multilayered story that I was drawn into and characters that I connected with. The cast members are brilliant, especially the young actors. While the supernatural element is an integral part of this thematically rich and very atmospheric film, the greatness of The Devil's Backbone lies in its effective use of a ghost story to explore something potentially much more frightening: human nature.
