Whale Rider (2002)

I was positively surprised by this very emotional and touching movie. It deftly avoids clichés and is a breath of fresh air to the genre. Keisha Castle-Hughes gives a superb performance as Paikea, and the scene where her character gives a speech honoring her grandfather had me in tears. The ending is overwhelmingly powerful and brought more tears to my eyes.
